Charlton Athletic cruised to a 2-0 victory over Walsall away from home in the Sky Bet League One , putting them back into the top six.

The Addicks went one up through top scorer Lyle Taylor from the penalty spot, after only six minutes of play.

Tariqe Fosu’s swift turn inside the box led Walsall’s defender George Dobson making a clumsy challenge on the attacker. Taylor tucked the ball into the bottom right, sending goalkeeper Liam Roberts the wrong way.

Attacking Play

The away side almost doubled their lead after a clever back heel from Taylor who set up Fosu with a great opportunity just outside the six-yard box, however a last-ditch tackle sent the ball sailing over the bar.

Charlton were looking increasingly likely to add to their lead before the break. Walsall’s goalkeeper Roberts ensured that this won’t happen after pulling off a brilliant save to deny a Karlan Grant header from six yards out.

The south London club once again penetrated Walsall’s back line through Taylor, who was causing all sorts of problems for the defenders.

Momentum Continued

The half-time break didn’t seem to halt the away side’s momentum as their lead was doubled after 51 minutes.

Arsenal loanee Krystian Bielik dispatched from close range after a corner fell into the path of the defender, who fired it past the keeper.

The home side’s first real effort at goal came from a free-kick by Josh Ginnelly, who momentarily caused somewhat of a concern for Charlton keeper Jed Steer. However the ball floated just inches over the bar.

It took 77 minutes for the Saddlers to register a shot on target, as Morgan Ferrier forced a diving stop from Steer, who managed to parry the ball to safety.

Fosu’s return

Star player Tariqe Fosu recently returned from an injury and spoke to the Addicks official site after the game about his fitness and his improvement under manager Lee Bowyer:

“It’s been tough for me but I’m getting back to full fitness and I’m working hard to try and get back to how I left off last season.

“We’ve been on it, Bows has been on at us all week to not slack and we put in a good shift, all the boys did, and it was a good win.”

Perfect Performance

Walsall have now lost four of their last five games, whereas Charlton are looking in good form after securing their eighth and second consecutive win of the season which moves them up into the play-off spots.
