Charlton could be on the verge of a takeover after club director Richard Murray announced on the club’s official websites that a fee has been agreed between two parties, ahead of the end-of-season promotion push.

The statement on www.cafc.co.uk read “We are just waiting for their respective lawyers to finalise the sale and purchase agreement,” and that a deal could be finalised “within the next few weeks”.

Charlton, currently seventh in the Sky Bet League One, have not enjoyed the best of form and dropped out of the final playoff spot after suffering defeat against Shrewsbury Town last weekend.

The club has been owned by Belgian millionaire Roland Duchâtelet since January 2014. Duchâtelet, a man who has been largely unpopular amongst the fans in south east London since his arrival, officially put the club up for sale in December 2017 amid protests organised by the club’s supporters.

‘Mock funeral’

CARD (Coalition Against Ronald Duchâtelet), a well-known Charlton supporters group, even went as far as to hold a mock funeral for their club before a Sky Bet Championship game against Middlesbrough back in 2016.

However, Murray also said that the potential new owner will only be revealed once the deal goes through, suggesting that Charlton fans must remain patient regarding the potential buyer: “Once the new ownership has been legally achieved, we will inform everyone by our official channels.”
