Cheeseman Seeks European Glory

Benjamin Winterbottom previews Matchroom's big fight night at the O2 Arena.

Ted Cheeseman (15-0) will challenge unbeaten Spaniard Sergio Garcia (28-0) for the EBU European Super Welterweight Title at the O2 on February 2nd.

Cheeseman Goes For Gold

The 23-year-old Londoner will be looking to add another belt to his collection that includes the British title he won against Asinia Byfield last time out at the Copper Box Arena in October.

Garcia, who is promoted by former Middleweight World Champion Sergio Martinez will travel to the United Kingdom for the first time as a professional after fighting 28 times in his native Spain.

Cheeseman is returning to the O2 Arena for the first time since February of last year, where he beat experienced American Carson Jones.

The super-welterweight is coming to the fight as a slight favourite and will be hoping the home crowd will lead him to victory.

Should the British champion win the contest, it could set up a potential clash with domestic rival Anthony Fowler who is scheduled to fight unbeaten Scott Fitzgerald in March.

Okolie Is Back

Another British champion will also be in action as Lawrence Okolie is set to return against an opponent yet to be announced.

Okolie (10-0) is set for a big year and has already set his sights on former Unified Cruiserweight Champion Denis Lebedev.

Prospects On The Bill

Unbeaten Middleweight Felix Cash (10-0) will also be in action, challenging for his second belt as he takes on Abolaji Rasheed for the Commonwealth Title.

Nigerian-born Rasheed has fought just once in the UK before, back in 2017 in a loss to Sam Sheedy.

Craig Richards (13-1) and Jake Ball (12-1) are finally set to square off, three months after their original contest was called off after Ball picked up an injury.

The bout is seen as a must-win for both as they push for a shot at the British title that has recently been vacated by Callum Johnson who is expected to make his return in America later this year.

Also on the card, John Docherty (2-0) and Fabio Wardley (5-0) will continue their rise through the professional ranks, whilst Charles Frankham will be making his professional debut after he signed with Matchroom boxing earlier this month.

Speaking at the press conference, Managing Director of Matchroom Sport Eddie Hearn was excited about the step up in class for Cheeseman.

“This is great that you have a young fighter local to The O2 who has had 15 fights and is willing to take these kinds of steps against Sergio Garcia, a European Champion – top five with the WBC and top 15 with many other organisations as well.

“It’s a massive step and these young fighters are being prepared to step up to these levels quicker than historically they’ve done before.”

The event will be broadcast live on SkySports in the UK and DAZN in the US.

You can watch the press-conference on Sky Sports Boxing’s YouTube channel.
