Chris Powell endures miserable Charlton return

Greg Morley reports on an impressive win for Charlton…

Two goals from Tony Watt and a fantastic free kick from Johan Gudmundsson ensured Huddersfield manager Chris Powell left his former club without a point as Charlton stormed to a 3-0 victory.

Powell is considered a club legend, having made over 200 appearances for the club as well as managing the side between 2011 and 2014. He was given a rapturous reception by the home support throughout, who also vented their frustration at current owner Roland Duchatelet over the club’s strategy.

Picking up their third 3-0 victory in four matches, the Addicks have begun to find their form again after previously going three months without a league win.

The Terriers were the first to have the ball in the net, though Ishmael Miller was penalised for bringing down home goalkeeper Stephen Henderson.

After a relatively even opening to the game, the breakthrough came just after the half hour mark. Johan Gudmundsson stepped up to curl a superb free kick into the corner from twenty five yards.

Huddersfield did have their opportunities, and should have equalised soon after, only to see a shot dragged wide of the left-hand post.

The second half saw the Londoners wrap up the points in style. Igor Vetokele set up man of the match Tony Watt for Charlton’s second of the game three minutes after the restart. Watt caused Huddersfield’s defence problems all afternoon, and claimed his second of the match on 71 minutes.

After a spell of away pressure, a neat move saw Watt break away to calmly slot home and give Powell an unhappy return to the Valley.

Victory for the hosts saw them move up into 12th in the Championship table, with a midweek match at home to Nottingham Forest next. Meanwhile, defeat for Powell’s men mean they now drop to 14th on 42 points, with the gap between themselves and 21st placed Rotherham a mere five points.
