Jazza Dickens survived a late resurgence from Leigh Wood to win a thriller and qualify for the final of the MTK Featherweight Golden Contract Tournament.

He’ll take on Ryan Walsh you cruised to a comfortable points decision over Tyrone McCullagh earlier in the night.

In the Super-Lightweight Tournament, Ohara Davies will take on Tyrone McKenna in the final after both claimed victory at York Hall, McKenna in very controversial circumstances.

Fight Of The Night

Dickens(29-3) and Wood(23-2) lived up to being top of the bill, putting on a potential fight of the year candidate, with Dickens claiming the WBO European Featherweight Title in the process.

The Liverpool born southpaw started in brilliant fashion, putting on a near punch-perfect performance in the first five rounds, before keeping Wood at bay in the final rounds to take a majority decision victory (96-94, 95-94, 95-95).

Speaking to Sky Sports after the fight, Dickens was in a confident mood, saying;

“I’m the best fighter in this tournament and i was from Day One. That’s why I entered it and i’m going to push on to world titles.”

Meeting Dickens in the final will be Ryan Walsh who came through a frustrating contest with Tyrone McCullagh. Walsh(26-2-2) struggled to land clean shots in the early stages as McCullagh(14-1) danced his way around the ring, but as the Northern Irishman tired, Walsh began to up the gears, winning a unanimous decision (97-91×2, 96-92).

Controversial Judging

Elsewhere, in the Super-Lightweight tournament, controversy reigned as Mohamed Mimoune appeared to many to have earned a comfortable win, until all three judges ringside scored the contest in Tyrone McKenna’s favour (97-93, 96-94×2).

Sky pundits Matt Macklin, Johnny Nelson and Anthony Crolla were all left stunned by the decision which left Mimoune(22-4) visibly angry and upset. However McKenna(21-1-1) progresses to the final where he will take on Ohara Davies.

Davies(21-2) left the fight in no doubt as he controlled the contest with Jeff Ofori (10-2-1) up until the stoppage in the 6th round. It was Davies’ first fight with new trainer Angel Fernandez and despite the strong performance, the Spaniard believes there is still room for improvement.

“What I tried to do is get him moving better, better defence, footwork, but there is a lot of room to work on. I’m hoping for the next fight we will have a lot more time together and changes will be there”

Both Davies and McKenna have history together, clashing backstage during the quarter-finals of the tournament and both will be desperate to get one over each other.

Both Featherweight and Super-Lightweight finals are set to take place in June and details will be announced in due course.
