Essex return to action in the LV= Insurance County Championship away to Somerset at The Cooper Associates County Ground on Thursday 14th April.

After last week’s season opening draw at home to local rivals Kent, Essex will be aiming to put up another big first inning score (514) while this time trying to reduce the opposition to a much lower score than they did against Kent (581).

Essex will be boosted by the expected return of South African spinner Simon Harmer who helped South Africa to a 2-0 series win against Bangladesh by taking 13 wickets on a triumphant return to test cricket for the 33-year-old after six years of international wilderness.

Hosts Somerset will be trying to bounce back from a disappointing start to the new season after they lost by an innings and 113 runs away at Hampshire in three days. They did have nine players unavailable for selection before the game due to injuries and sickness. Head Coach Jason Kerr has said ‘I anticipate Lewis Gregory, Josh Davey, Craig Overton and Jack Leach will be available next game. Fingers crossed we’ll have selection headaches.
