Fans meet hero Brooking at Newham book shop

Muhammed Mustaqim meets the legendary Sir Trevor Brooking at the release of a new autobiography.

Football fans queued yesterday to meet West Ham’s legendary Sir Trevor Brooking MBE, 66, at a book signing session at the Newham Bookshop in Barking Road.

Brooking, who recently stepped down as the Football Association’s director of football development after a decade in the role, released his new book ‘Sir Trevor Brooking: My Life in Football’.

West Ham fans were extraordinarily happy in reuniting with the five-times ‘Hammer of the Year’. There were plenty of photos and laughter with the man who gave them plenty of memories to cherish.

Born on the 2nd of October 1948, in Barking, Essex, Brooking made 647 appearances for West Ham in a prodigious 21 years of service to the Hammers, scoring 102 goals. He also played 47 times for England, scoring five goals in the process.

Part of the illustrious teams of the 70s and 80s, he won two FA Cups in his time with the club. He was the sole goalscorer in the 1980 FA Cup final, where he scored the only goal to beat the then cup holders, Arsenal, with a headed goal. West Ham went on to become the first and last team to win the cup as a team outside division one.

Asked whether his head hurt after the ball struck him at a ferocious pace before guiding it into the net, he responded: “Oh, no! I was absolutely fine.”
