In less than a year, Budapest will host the biggest sporting event in Hungary’s history, the 2023 World Athletics Championships, with athletes from over 200 nations participating in the event.

The event will take place from August 19th to 27th, 2023 where the World Athletics Championships fans from all over the word will be able to attend.

Money Moves

A new stadium is being built for the World Athletics Championships. The event will be held at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest, and a new stadium will be built on the east bank of the Danube, south of Budapest.

The championship capacity is 35,000 temporarily but will be reduced to 15,000 for events to come. This stadium will be the main venue for the competition and training place for the Hungarian athletes.

IAAF President Sebastian Coe said, “Construction was still underway.”

“I am pleased with the schedule and the progress made.

“I am probably the first to run in the new stadium, construction is still ongoing on, but it will be great, and the athletics heritage is very important.” He added.

Hungarian team member Bence Halasz said,

“It is an honour and a great pleasure to be part of a generation of Hungarian athletes who host world athletes in our country.

“I can’t wait to step into my new stadium and compare myself to the best players in the world in front of my home crowd. It will be a huge boost for us and for generations to come. ”

Team Selections

Previous student at the University of East London, GB’s Adam Gemili may be amongst the athletes competing in the World Championship at Budapest2023 next year.

It likely that Gemili may be competing in the 200m and the relay. However, this is yet to be confirmed as Gemili did not qualify in the 200m in Oregon and was knocked out in the semi-finals due to “bad press” taking a toll on his mental health.
