Kamarai Swyer put pen to paper on his first professional contract with West Ham on his 18th birthday last Friday.

The young forward has had a very impressive start to the season playing across the front three. Operating as a winger and playmaker he’s earned himself a three-year deal. He’s been at the club since the age of eight, and 10 years later, he is now within touching distance of the first team.

Punching Above His Weight

With stunning performances, he earned himself a call up to the U23 squad, coming off the bench in the game against Blackburn Rovers back in October. Since then, he’s made four more appearances in the claret and blue for the development squad in the Papa John’s Trophy.

Swyer started in the game against last year’s finalists Portsmouth, who remained undefeated in the competition for the last two years. But the Hammers managed to end the winning streak with a 1-0 victory kicking them out of the competition.

First Team Dreams

Under 18’s coach Kevin Keen has high hopes for Swyer, as he says “He can score goals, he can create goals, and he’s got a frame which he’s working on to make [him[ more athletic, but which could be very useful in Premier League football, certainly in the 2020s”.

With coach Keen touting the young 18-year-old as a future Premier League prospect, Swyer will be hoping his development can lead him to great heights, with the aim of featuring in a match for the first team.

The 18-year-old was delighted to sign the contract and become a professional footballer, he spoke with the West Ham media team after the signing.

Brilliant

Swyer beamed: “As soon as I joined the Club at eight, it’s all I’ve really wanted to achieve. It’s been brilliant here so far. This club is like a family – it’s all I know. I just want to keep pushing and hopefully, one day, go on to play for the first team”

With the Premier League being as exciting as it has been for as long as we can remember, there is no more of an opportune time to be in the position that young Swyer is currently in. With the first team in his sights, he will be looking to get his head down to work hard with the first team in his sights.
