Millwall continued their push for a promotion place at The Den on Saturday, as they beat West London rivals Brentford 1-0, thanks to a George Saville goal, taking their unbeaten run to 11 games.

The game started well for The Lions when after 51 seconds Jed Wallace closed down Andreas Bjelland and fed through Saville who calmly finished past Daniel Bentley in The Bees goal.

Brentford thought they had equalised when Yoann Barbet scored at the Cold Blow Lane end and celebrated in front of the Millwall fans, only for the linesman to rule the goal out for offside.

Millwall had more opportunities to double their lead, most notably when Saville’s effort from the edge of the area hit the post during the first half, whilst in the second half Steve Morison’s header was tipped over the bar by Bentley.

Promotion Prospects

The result sees The Lions move in to 10th place, just six points off the play-off places, something which has fans excited at the prospect of playing in the Premier League next season.

Speaking to the official Millwall website after the game, Millwall manager Neil Harris shared the fans’ optimism: “Millwall going like a steam train pleases me. We’re six points off the Play-Offs with nine games to go – the players and fans have earned the right to dream. You make your own luck in this game and today we rode ours, but we worked hard.”

The early goal was vital for Millwall today and Harris recognised this: “The early goal gives you a boost and gives you something to hold on to. But, then that gives you the problem of the opposition throwing caution to the wind and getting bodies forward.

“When you need to stand strong, especially here at The Den, you need everyone to put their bodies on the line – I thought my players did that today.”

The Lions will now travel to Barnsley next week where they will look to take their unbeaten run to 12 games and get themselves even closer to the play-offs.
