UEL Men’s Basketball Second Team secured a vital 79-44 win on Wednesday against the University of Hertfordshire.

After two losses and one victory this season, UEL, who got promoted last year, needed a confidence boost.

Strong Performance

Immediately after the match second team captain, Matthew McKoy-McIntosh, spoke to Rising East:

“I feel like every game is a must win, I feel like after the two defeats that we feel we should’ve won we came back and did our job on our home turf and came out with the win.

“We executed pretty well in the first half, the defence was amazing throughout and the coach (Marvin Addy) is happy so we’re all happy.”

New Role

McKoy-McIntosh has only recently inherited the mantle of Second Team captain, taking over responsibility from Dom Stevens last year.

Speaking on how he is settling into the role, the Guard said: “it’s a challenge because I’ve got a lot of duties and responsibilities to take care of. I’m learning day-by-day how to lead the team and making sure everyone is happy.

“I’ve also got to make sure that everybody is doing what their supposed to be doing at the same time, but I’m quite enjoying it so far and hopefully we can come out with the league and the cup this year.”

High Ambitions

The men’s basketball club have always had high aspirations, and that is no different for the Second Team. As captain McIntosh is leading from the front in what he wants to achieve in his final year of playing:

“The focus is more on the Cup now as I feel London South Bank University have got a tight hold on the number one spot, but anything can happen as the year goes on – any team can lose on any given day.

“We feel like we’ll keep our eye on the league with our main focus now on the cup, but also to go undefeated in the league as well. Basically, win every single game that we play, from here on out to the end of the season.”

UEL face the University of Surrey next week at SportsDock, who they lost to on the opening day of the season by a single point.
