The 2022 London local elections take place on the May 5th. For the elections in Newham, local community newspaper Newham Voices organised two hustings events in Canning Town, and Rising East attended the one on Saturday. It was a chance for the public to meet the candidates running for the Mayor of Newham and to hear about their promises. Shirin Ghayad listened to what the candidates had to say and asked some locals for their views.
Newham Voices (NV) is an independent, community-led newspaper which reports on local news and community concerns. In the last elections Newham had the lowest voter turnout in London, so this time round NV organised these hustings in an attempt to bring more attention to politics and to get more people to vote.
