No Shortage Of Humour During Water Shortage

The entrepreneurial response to a water outage in East London last weeks shows that COVID has not crushed our spirit.

Thames Water has was forced to apologise after a burst pipe in Hackney Marshes meant nine East London postcodes lost their water. The areas affected included Waltham Forest, Hackney, and Newham.

But instead of moaning about the fact that at a time when we are told to wash our hands constantly  there was no water to wash with, people took to social media to have some fun.

One Newham resident quickly got to pricing a jug full of tap water on Ebay at £100, with £3.70 postage.Meanwhile George Cojocaru decided that bottled water was worth twice that. He advertised a 2L bottle of Highland Spring for £200 – but was at least honest enough to say it was only three quarters full, and added that it was “… negotiable. East London only.”

Less classy was the person who posted the following offer on social media:

But every silver lining has a cloud inside, and there were also sad storied on the web such as Charlotte Clements’ below:

But my favourite tweet was this one from a young girl: “We don’t have water but we are still proud.”

That’s East London for you – parched but proud!
