Charlton Athletic secured three points at the Valley on Saturday as they managed to overcome Doncaster Rovers 2-0.

The Addicks were looking to bounce back from defeat at Rochdale last weekend which left their promotion push in question.

However, goals from Joe Aribo and Karlan Grant were enough to secure the South London club a big win and move them to within touching distance of the play-off spots.

Frantic First-Half

The game sprung into life in the opening stages with the first chance of the match falling to Doncaster’s Herbie Kane.

The 19-year-old was denied from close-range courtesy of an excellent piece of goalkeeping from Charlton’s Jed Steer.

Two more opportunities fell the way of the visitors, but Niall Mason was only able to drag his shot wide

The Yorkshire club were then left to rue their missed chances as Lee Bowyer’s side netted twice in the space of 15 minutes.

Tom Anderson headed a corner on to his own crossbar and Aribo was on hand to poke home from inside a congested penalty area.

The hosts doubled their lead in the 33rd minute as Lyle Taylor’s sumptuous cross expertly picked out Grant who nodded home from close range.

Both goals seemed to knock the stuffing out of Doncaster with the eighth-placed club failing to respond.

Dominance

Just before the close of the first-half, Jamie Ward came tantalizingly close to adding a third as he crashed a free-kick against the post.

Taylor was again the creator of the game’s next biggest chance. The forward’s cross was scrambled away back Doncaster’s back-line into the path of Aribo, who dragged his effort wide.

Bowyer’s men continued to push for a third. Substitute Mark Marshall’s searching delivery picked out Igor Vetokele at the back post, but his effort was smothered behind by Rovers’ defence.

Professional Performance

Bowyer told the official Addicks site: “I thought it was a good performance, a professional performance. I think we could have scored more goals, so I think the result was fair.

We competed, we won individual battles, they worked hard as a team which is the most important thing and moved the ball well.”

Play-Off Spots

Victory moved the Addicks above Doncaster in League One and to within just three points of the play-off spots with a game in hand.

On Tuesday evening, Charlton travel to the West Midlands to take on Walsall.
