Spice World Reactivated

During the week leading up to ticket sales for The Spice Girls 2019 Reunion Tour, the ladies released a promotional video that confirmed that Posh Spice won’t be joining them. The one-minute clip was filled with banter and even squeezed in an acapella moment. Fans went crazy.

The foursome were also on Heat FM, whose listeners were in for a nostalgic treat when host Jamie Theakston welcomed them onto the mics.

When he asked them if they would struggle to sell tickets, they answered with a collective – and excited – ‘NO!’

And they were right. Soon after tickets went live on the 10th of November, the foursome broke Ticketmaster’s UK record by selling out all 11 stadium dates.

The  Ticketmaster statement read: “Demand for Spice Girls was off the chart. They have smashed through Ticketmaster’s record, becoming the busiest ever sale… with a queue at one point of well over 700,00”. Their greatest hits album also shot straight to number one on iTunes.

Although Posh Spice has decided not to take part, she’s still got a lot to celebrate. Victoria Beckham won the Fashion Icon Award at 44th People’s Choice Awards, held this year in in Santa Monica. To celebrate her ten years as a fashion brand, she is also on the cover of Vogue Australia’s November issue. As for the reunion tour, she’s shown her supportive side on social media and her band mates insisted on the breakfast show that, “She still a part of The Spice Girls”.

In the Heat FM interview Theakston reminds listeners of the “chaotic” interview he carried out with them 22 years ago on The Ozone. The interview is still remembered as one of his funniest ever, and judging by this performance the chaos is much the same as ever.

The women still speak over each other and fans will recognise the harmless bickering of Mel B and Geri as part of the old dynamic. When Theakston asks the foursome if they ever doubted they would tour again, Mel C says, “There were times that I wasn’t sure about doing it – But now I’m very VERY excited…we want our fans from back in the day to come and enjoy it”.

Mel B then makes the point that she on the other hand was never in any doubt that the girls would eventually perform together again.

Geri takes some time to tell Jamie how – although she and Emma had often chatted about a reunion – “…it got to a point where it was like maybe we have to let it go…”  In fact she takes so long that Mel B buts in by saying: “A short answer would have been good!”

Emma attempts to re-establish some calm by pointing out that the tour will make their children proud. “The kids will really love to see us perform on stage”.

If you weren’t as lucky as I was to get your hands on some tickets, there are people reselling theirs for around £2,000. That’s 20 times the asking price!
