A man found dead in a river near Blaker Road in Stratford is believed to be the body of murder suspect Miguel Angel Alvarez Florentino, 38-years-old.

Although the police have said the death won’t be treated as suspicious, locals told Rising East that the event had unsettled them.

Carissa Svedberg said: “The rising number of incidents is making me feel more nervous about the area that I used to consider safe. This will definitely make me more weary of my surroundings”. Emily Miche, an East London student, said she would now be “anxious to have to attend…” her Stratford campus.

According to Crimerate.co.uk, Stratford Central is the most dangerous neighbourhood in Newham, with 2441 crimes so far reported this year compared to the safest neighbourhood in Newham, Plashet East, with only 408 crimes reported.

Stats on the same site also show that Newham is becoming increasingly unsafe as so far this year the borough has recorded a 26% increase in drug crime, 51% increase in theft from a person and a 25% increase in crimes related to possession of a weapon.

Newham as a borough has also had a higher anti-social behaviour than the rest of London since the end of 2019.
