After a string of poor performance, former UEL scholar, Adam Gemili, has been removed from UK Athletics World-class Program funding level.

He was unable to advance to the Commonwealth Games final in August. But he was reserved as part of Britain’s 4×100 relay squad.

Sudden Change

The 29-year-old athlete was originally selected for the top Olympic podium level of UK Athletics World-class program funding scheme, but was later dropped in December after choosing to stay with his coach, Rana Reider.

Adam Gemili is being coached by Marco Airale after splitting with his previous coach, Rana Reider, who is being investigated after multiple sexual misconduct complaints were lodged against him.

The former UEL scholar was dropped from Olympic podium to Olympic relays. Lavinia Nielsen, who was born in East London, is also in the Olympic relays category.

Gemili and Nielsen were both dropped from UKA after deciding to stay with their previous coach, Rana Reider.

They were ineligible for UKA’s medical assistance and funding, which could be up to £28,000.

Pressure? Uncertainty?

There is now pressure on Adam Gemili to remain on the relay team. He won gold in the 4×100 relay at London 2012 and silver at Doha 2019.

The former UEL scholar wasn’t the only athlete that was dropped from the UK Athletics World-class Program funding.

Callus Hawkins, who is making a comeback after suffering an ankle injury, and Lynsey Sharp, who has not raced since 2019 and gave birth to her first child in October 2021 have also been dropped.
