UEL table tennis have had a near perfect season over the BUCS league suffering only one defeat. That came in the semi finals of the Southeastern Conference Cup against Brunel 1st, a team that had also gone undefeated. Ziyaad Patel, a player for UEL table tennis team spoke to Rising East about this campaign, future years and varsity.

The build up for varsity is extremely important for all the competing clubs. Table tennis is no different: “ We played Anglia Ruskin in our games and we won so our confidence for that game will be quite high and were hoping to still put maximum effort in and hopefully come out with the same result as our league game,” Patel said.

Exceeding Expectations

Over the year UEL table tennis have had significant success in the league winning every game back to back, dominating the league. “This year went really really well, we achieved beyond what we expected, especially with new members of the team, it showed the hard work of every member of the team during our training sessions and the hard work did pay off as we went through the season without getting beaten.

“We didn’t really experience the feeling to lose except when we got to the cup matches where we unfortunately lost in our semi-final, but we took a lot of positives in that game and that was something to work towards in the coming years”.

Building To The Future

The team are now looking ahead to varsity and preparing for the future years of the club, now that they have been promoted much stronger teams will stand in their way Patel said: “As a team were looking to improve our game and hopefully win the league next season to progress into the cup games, we know how hard it is facing the other teams in the higher divisions so we hope to improve our game to hopefully fight in the finals next year.

“But individually i’d like to up my game keep my confidence quite high and receive any guidance from any players who have experience such as Jamie and of course our coach”.
