Think Pink For Breast Cancer Awareness

The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) reports that breast cancer is still the second most common killer among UK females. In addition, Breast Cancer Now reports that 41% of women are not checking their breasts and 21% do not feel confident enough to do so.

Against this background, Breast Cancer Awareness month – October – is a key date in the calendar. The whole month is dedicated to informing women of what signs to look out for, to raise funds for further research, and to help those diagnosed.

Signs to look out for (in one or both breasts):new lumps/thickened tissues; shape change; nipple blood discharge or nipple change i.e. sunken into breast; nipple rash; lump or swelling in armpits.

Apart from checking for signs of breast cancer, you can change your diet as a preventative measure. A survey from Harvard University found that 16gm a day of whole grain cereal is a deterrent against cancer. Appropriately enough, Weetabix is one of many brands which are sponsoring Breast Cancer Awareness. For this month of October the cereal brand has changed its packaging to pink. But if Weetabix is not to your taste, opt for brown rice or whole grain pasta instead.

If you want to learn more on how to look for signs, the following organisations provide expert advice: Breast Cancer Care; Breast Cancer Now; Cancer Research UK; Macmillan support. They will also welcome you if you offer to volunteer.

October may be Breast Awareness month, but remember to stay Breast Aware at all times and remind anyone you know aged over 50 to visit their local clinic for screening, which should be completed every three years. The NHS reports that eight out of 10 cases of breast cancer occur in women over 50.
