Black History Month (BHM) began in the UK back in 1987, but grew out of the American Negro History Week that started in 1927. Does the fact that it is so well-established mean that it has earned its place as an important cultural event, that should remain on our calendar for ever? Or have the issues it was established to raise shifted so much that its job is done? Or has the BLM (Black Lives Matter) movement shown that in fact the opposite is true. Or maybe BHM has become muddled up with the more overtly political BLM in a way that does not help it achieve its aims?
