After the recent spell of stormy weather to hit the country, London has seen the Thames breaking it’s barriers at every possible point leading to multiple regattas getting cancelled left right and center, however the Reading University Head race is an event University of East London are hopeful is still on the cards for them.

The Race Format

Aiming to take place this weekend, the Reading head race course spans four kilometers and is raced with the fast flowing current of the river Thames near Caversham in Reading alongside the University boathouse.

The event is set to be held for a number of age groups and a number of large boat categories. The racing will only be taking place in Four’s, Quad’s, Eight’s and Oct’s.

The University of East London hasn’t enjoyed a racing series for a number of years, this being down to the lack of a trailer, logistics and other accumulated reasons.

The University team will be taking two Quads. The two four athlete boats will be racing against crews who span from all over the country.

The first crew representing the University will be the Men’s A crew racing in the Open Men’s Quads category.

The Women’s crew will also be racing in the Open Women’s event against lots of other national crews such as the Reading rowing club and multiple university crews.

Thoughts From The Team

Andrew Todd, Stroke of the Men’s crew is looking forward to his debut race for the university.

“Reading head will be my first race for East London Boat Club after joining in September.

This will hopefully show the good work carried out over winter and set a starting point for future races mainly HORR and BUCS.” he said.

The Reading University Head Race, weather dependent, will take place on Saturday 29th February in Reading.
