Even as Brexit seems to get further and further away, people still want to know what effect leaving the EU will eventually have on the status of EU citizens who currently live here?

The details on the GOV.UK site are complex and will depend on whether we leave with or without a deal. But one important point is that settled status has to be applied for, and is not granted automatically. Any EU citizens who want to continue living here after June 30th 2021 have to apply for settled status before that date. In fact there are two types of status. EU citizens who have been here for under five years apply for “pre-settled” status, and those with more than five years here apply for “settled status.”

Back in January Theresa May announced that the application would cost £65 if you are 16 or over and £32.50 if you are under 16. The outcry that followed meant that she quickly scrapped the idea, but for the moment you still need to pay it out before getting it reimbursed.

Given the confusion and insecurity that the changes are causing to some EU nationals, Rising East decided to ask students what they thought about the £65, and the plans in general.
