Victoria Park is the only London park to win a Green Flag People’s Choice Award, making the park one of the most iconic parks in the country in 2021.

The top 10 list was made by The Green Flag Award scheme, the international quality standard for parks and green spaces, celebrating its Silver Jubilee this year.

The public had the opportunity to vote for their favourite park in the UK, and more than 30,000 votes were received.

After receiving the exciting news John Biggs, the Mayor of Tower Hamlets said “Thanks to the tireless work of our amazing staff and volunteers, Victoria Park is a great place for recreation, sports, play, and relaxation and has yet again proven, by the public, to be the jewel in the borough’s crown.

“I’d like to thank everyone who voted for Victoria Park, and I am delighted that it has been recognised in the Green Flag People’s Choice Awards, for the eighth year running.”

What do we know about Victoria Park?

Victoria Park in East London is one of London’s oldest parks, at 170 years old. Many organisations have managed the park in the past years, the significant settings for various leisure day-to-day outings, sports, and relaxation have never failed the community.

The park became necessary when the population rapidly grew in the early 19th century with overcrowded housing, high mortality rate and polluted air.

Many original features of the park were lost and damaged during World War II, and storms in the 1980s.

In the last 10 years, the park received funding from Tower Hamlets Council and HLF Lottery Fund and have restored and included the well-known Burdett-Coutts fountain, as well as a café, and playgrounds for the young ones.
