Yarde Stops Sequeria To Continue KO Streak

Anthony Yarde maintained his unblemished record after a fourth round stoppage win over Argentine Walter Gabriel Sequeria at the Brentwood Centre. Benjamin Winterbottom reviews the fight.

Yarde For The Win

The Ilford-based Light-Heavyweight dropped his opponent early in the fourth round before a flurry of punches saw Sequeira in no position to continue, leasing referee Phil Edwards to stop the contest.

The victory sees Yarde retain his WBO Inter-Continental Light-Heavyweight title and move to 17-0.

Many fans have been keen to see Yarde step up and face some domestic foes such as Joshua Buatsi and Hosea Burton, but that looks unlikely now with Yarde’s promoter Frank Warren suggesting Yarde is past British level.

Title Fight In The Works

Warren told BT Sport after the event: “Our sights are on a world title fight, and I want to get him in a position where, when I feel he’s right I’ll let him off the hook.”

Warren also confirmed that Yarde will fight again before the end of the year on a date yet to be confirmed.

The Beast From The East

Yarde was pleased with the fight, but keen to emphasise on his lack of experience.

“It was a good fight but I’m still learning. I felt like I landed the shot I needed to win the fight and it’s another victory.

I’m doing an apprenticeship in front of the world because of the way I fight and that’s why people want to see me get tested,” he added.

Garton Wins Despite Problems In The Crowd

Elsewhere on the card, Johnny Garton defeated Gary Corcoran to win the British Welterweight Title, but the win was overshadowed by conflict in the crowd.

The fracas was so poor that officials threatened to cancel the event if it carried on.

However, this failed to distract Garton as he stormed to a late stoppage to secure the belt.

There were also wins for Heavyweight prospect Nathan Gorman as he eyes a potential battle with domestic rival Daniel Dubois next year.

Hometown favourite Joe Mullender got a comprehensive victory over Ben Capps and 20-year old Zak Chelli defeated fellow undefeated fighter Umar Sadiq in a classy points decision.
