Charlton Athletic pulled themselves further away from the relegation zone with a 2-0 win at home against Burton Albion on Saturday.

Johnnie Jackson’s men were in complete control throughout the 90 minutes as they didn’t allow the visitors to get a single shot on target.

The win moved the club up to 15th in the Sky Bet League One table and, more importantly, 13 points clear of the relegation zone.

MAC-NIFICENT

The opening goal was route one football at its finest. Goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray collected the ball from a Burton throw in and immediately fired a pass over the top of the defence which striker Conor Washington latched onto, before lifting his first-time shot over the head of onrushing goalkeeper Ben Garratt and into the back of the net.

Corey Blackett-Taylor doubled the Addicks’ lead three minutes before the end of the first-half, when the wing-back picked up the ball on the edge of the box, jinked through a few defenders and rolled his shot into the bottom left-hand corner of the visitors’ net.

Status Secured

Back-to-back wins have eased Charlton’s relegation doubts; the previous run of only one point in seven games had raised concerns that the Addicks may be drawn into the fight for survival, but those six points gained in the last two games have moved them away from the drop zone.

The club can now focus on finishing as high up the table as possible as they look to build momentum and take that into next season.

The Addicks are next in action on Saturday when they travel to the Eco-Power Stadium to face relegation-threatened Doncaster Rovers.
