After the departure of Tom Meighan, Kasabian’s original frontman and lead vocalist – no one knew what the future held for the dance-rockers band.

But in May, Kasabian announced a whole new set of dates for their tour that would include more intimate venues around the UK and would be the first in a run of gigs with Sergio Pizzorno taking the lead singer role.

A New Era

Seeing Kasabian live at the 02 Academy Brixton, which was completely sold out for both Tuesday and Wednesday night, felt like seeing a completely new band and I feel, alongside many other fans, this is going to be a completely new era for the group. Pizzorno doesn’t have the same vocal range as Meighan, but he doesn’t need to. For anyone that said he could not fill his shoes and be a frontman, they were definitely wrong.

Kicking off the gig with the popular song “Club Foot” the band automatically got the crowd going and the atmosphere around the whole venue was unmatched. It really felt like this band had brought all of their fans together and made them forget about the awful year of 2020 we all suffered.

As a new frontman of the band, Pizzorno had the crowd eating out the palm of his hand. The band performed their new song which was released exactly a week before the gig titled “ALYGATYR” and the crowd loved it. This song has brought out a completely new and different vibe for their new beginning, which just shows that this band is capable of anything.

Pizzorno On Top Form

Continuing with their previous music throughout the gig including songs like “Switchblade Smiles” and my personal favourite “Vlad the Impaler”, each and every song that got played made the audience became even more energetic. Pizzorno came across to me as a genuine frontman with his radiating energy, like he had been doing this his whole life. He made it seem so easy and effortless.

Normally, when going to see an artist perform live, the audience dies down towards the end just out of being exhausted and sweaty. This certainly did not happen for this gig. Kasabian played their most popular tune “Fire” as their last song and this, in my opinion, was when the audience atmosphere was unbelievable.

Everybody went wild. Drinks were thrown and every single person at that venue came as one and jumped their way through the madness, screaming the lyrics at the top of their lungs.

Speaking to UEL student Joe Munns after the gig, he explained the concert to be “One of the best gigs I have ever attended, in terms of the atmosphere:

“I was skeptical about frontman Meighan not being there as I have not been to a Kasabian gig beforehand but Serge did not disappoint as the new frontman of the band and put one of the best performances I have ever seen.”
