What happened last year?

The Lions made it through to the Quarter Finals in the 2019-20 BBL Cup. In a slightly different format to the upcoming season’s group stages, the 12 teams were separated into two groups, North and South. The Lions found themselves in the South Group with London City Royals, Worcester Wolves, Bristol Flyers, Surrey Scorchers, and Plymouth Raiders.

The top four teams gained qualification to the quarter finals with the Lions skimming through in fourth place after winning five games and losing five games with a total point differential of plus 20.

The Lions however lost Leicester Raiders in the quarter finals 72-63 failing to defend the cup they won back in 2018-19.

The competition

Newcastle Eagles

In their history, The Eagles have really been a thorn in the Lions’ side with the northern team being victorious in over two-thirds of the games played. Recently, London Lions have got stronger over the team, winning five fixtures on the bounce across 2018 and 2019. However, this a competition that the Eagles are very familiar with in fact they’ve won more cups than anyone in the league (5).

Sheffield Sharks

The Sharks haven’t beaten London Lions since 2017, a losing streak of seven games against the capitals side. This does however bode well that the Lions will come victorious over them in the coming games.

Leicester Riders

The last 10 games have been fairly contested between the two, winning five games each. The two sides have been the strongest in recent years with each team winning a championship and coming runners-up in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 British Basketball League seasons.
