Using hashtags such as #nigeriansinUkraine and #IndiansinUkrraine, videos and images have been shared of Asian and black refugees from the war in Ukraine apparently being mistreated by security officials.

A friend of mine who wanted his identity to be hidden successfully fled Ukraine on the 27th of February.

He described driving for hours with some of his schoolmates to Odessa on the coast through which he wanted to travel to Romania.

On getting there, he and his friends had guns pointed at them and almost got shot by armed civilians.

They were told to lay down on the floor, but as he speaks Russian he was able to explain that they were just students trying to get to the border and they were eventually allowed through.

They searched for hotels but were unable to find any, and so were forced to pass the night outside in freezing temperatures outside a petrol station.

He explained that he was of of the lucky ones to make it through to the Romanian border; but heard that students who went through the Polish border found it harder to get across because of their race. Listen to some of what he had to say below:

Although many Africans and Asian students have now managed to leave Ukraine, there are reports of hundreds left behind, including in Russian-occupied Kherson.

A recent BBC article contains different heartfelt experiences of Africans and Asians trying to leave the country

A Change.org petition has been set up to help those students stuck in Kherson
