UEL Women’s Badminton Team face their first challenge of 2019 on Wednesday. They are set to take on West London rivals Brunel University’s first team.

The end of 2018 saw the Blues finish the year on a high with their first victory of the season. A 7-1 home win against School of Oriental and African Studies secured them three vital points to move up to third in the table.

This game will be crucial for both sides as they both currently have six points in the league. Brunel have a slight advantage over UEL with more individual games won, meaning they take second place in the league by default.

October saw a tough defeat for UEL as they suffered an 8-0 defeat to Brunel in their first meeting of the season.

New Year, New Start

A new year comes with a fresh start for the side who had an arduous start to their season. Nearly having the team cut from the university in October and being knocked out of the Conference Cup in November, things seems to be looking up for the side now going into the new year.

Former doubles player Shu Qi Aw said that the win in December was a ‘huge encouragement for our team.’ She also added that going forward the aims for the club this year should be “…getting permanent members on the team as we always have trouble forming a full team.” This is something which is echoed through the whole club as an aim for the coming year.

All The Positives

The team are also turning one of their negatives from last year into a positive. Being knocked out of the conference cup gives them the time to focus all their efforts onto the league.

This channeled effort on the league is starting to pay off as the progress of the team is showing outside of training and being reflected in their results now.

UEL are hoping to continue this momentum of progress into their remaining games of the season and finish in the top three of the league.

The match will take place on Wednesday 23rd January away at Brunel at 1pm.
