Karlan Grant’s  stoppage-time penalty goal gave Charlton Athletic a dramatic victory against Accrington Stanley.

In the 82nd minute of the game the referee sent off Lyle Taylor and goalkeeper Jonny Maxted after a mass brawl in the Accrington’s penalty box.

The drama continued in the last minutes of the game after a shot from Ben Reeves was deflected to Daniel Barlaser’s hand and the assistant referee awarded the penalty which led the Addicks to an important victory at home.

Quick Start

The hosts lost a couple of good chances to open the score earlier in the match with most important one the missed chance in the 12th minute. Lyle Taylor from the right delivered a low ball across the face of goal, which needed a simple tap in but missed by Darren Pratley and Grant.

Dillion Philips had an excellent night as he denied the visitors a couple of times to take the lead. Most important chances of the visitors were Luke Armstrong’s shot from close range five minutes before the break and a header from Kee in the early minutes of the second half found the Addicks goalkeeper in position.

Deserved Win

Lee Bowyer told the official Addicks site: “ It was a very tough games. I said in my notes before the game it was going to be tough. It was tough when we played them up there, they are a good side, they are a physical side. I knew they were going to make it difficult but I think overall I thought we deserved it if you look at the full 90 minutes.”

“Teams are going to make it hard and you have to win ugly sometimes. You have to keep going and believing and that’s a hard thing to do when you have to keep going with expectation. I think everyone knows that we demand that we go to the end and we got our reward today and so did the fans. I’m sure everybody will be going home happy.”
